Frequently Asked LASIK Questions
Am I a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery?
There are a number of things that might make you a great candidate for LASIK eye surgery. In general, to be a candidate for laser vision correction and LASIK eye surgery you should:
• Be at least 18 years of age or older
• Have stable vision for at least a year prior to the procedure
• Be free of certain diseases of the cornea and retina
• Be in good general health.
Your eye health, current prescription, history and eye shape will all help determine whether or not LASIK eye surgery can help correct your vision and help you see without glasses or contacts.
Dr. Sambursky also recommends you have a number of visual tests to determine whether you are a candidate for laser vision correction. These tests can be performed in our offices and the cost of the tests is included in the cost of your laser vision correction procedure.
It is important for you to remember that even if it is determined that you are not a candidate today, it does not mean that you will not be a candidate as new technology becomes available. However, laser vision correction is not for everyone, and some patients (for example, those with certain diseases of the eye involving the cornea or retina), will never be candidates. The best way for you to find this out is by having a free screening with LASIK eye surgery specialist, Dr. Sambursky.
During your initial laser vision correction screening, Dr. Sambursky will also help educate you regarding all aspects of laser vision correction, including risks, benefits, options and expected results.

What kind of results can I expect from laser vision correction?
Did you know that as many as 98% of laser vision correction procedures result in 20/40 vision or better? That’s good enough to pass a driver’s test. Since everyone’s eyes are different, no one can determine exactly what your results will be. But with a careful study of your current eye condition and prescription, doctors are usually able to predict success. Keep in mind that if Dr. Sambursky feels your results may be less than optimal, he will recommend you opt not to have laser vision correction.
Does LASIK hurt?
LASIK is a relatively painless procedure, and the actual LASIK surgery lasts only minutes. We use a topical eye drop (anesthesia) to numb the eye during the procedure. Most LASIK patients feel no pain at all during the actual procedure. Some LASIK patients describe a “scratchy” feeling for a short time following the surgery, but minor discomfort is only temporary. Eye drops and a nap usually take care of any discomfort after the LASIK surgery.
Is LASIK Vision Correction Safe?
The LASIK vision correction surgery has become so popular throughout the world because it offers so many benefits over other forms of laser vision correction: greater precision, less surface area to heal, less risk of scarring, less risk of corneal haze, less postoperative discomfort, less postoperative need for medications, and vision returns rapidly. There are risks with any surgical procedure. However, the complication rate involved with LASIK vision correction is one of the lowest in the medical field.
