If you have lesions around the eye, you may be considering having plastic surgery to improve the appearance of the eye or to remove the lesion for medical reasons. While lesions on the skin surrounding the eyelids are common, they may be benign, precancerous or cancerous. Lesions may be caused by sun exposure or heredity. The most common form of cancer on or around the eyelids is called basal cell carcinoma.

The Sarasota Macular Degeneration Institute offers careful monitoring and treatment for macular degeneration, noting that regular eye exams are important for both forms of AMD. Dietary modifications are also important to help reduce the risk of dry AMD from worsening. Early screening is key in maintaining vision.

Coastal Eye in Sarasota treats much more than Macular Degeneration in their Institute. Fuchs' corneal dystrophy is an inherited disease of the cornea. It affects both eyes, causes corneal swelling and loss of vision, and may need to be treated with corneal transplant surgery. Fortunately, patients have a great chance of maintaining their vision in the long term.

Often, patients with Grave's Disease can develop characteristic bulging eyeballs caused by a buildup of fat in the eye socket, or ‘orbit', that can squeeze the eye muscles and the eye ball. Bulging eyes can result in redness, pain, swelling, and double vision. In cases that are severe, vision may be impaired or lost.

There are treatment options available for orbital tumors, infections, thyroid disease, inflammation and trauma. Eye drops or oral steroids can often relieve pressure, allowing the eyeballs to relax into the eye sockets. Surgery can also help.

Coastal Eye in Sarasota can perform plastic surgery and also tear duct drainage surgery. In order to determine the degree of obstruction and the site of blockage, Dr. Berman will flush the tear ducts with saline. Flushing the system is a simple in office procedure and causes no discomfort. For some patients there is relief of the symptoms - but for most this is only temporarily requiring additional care. Surgery is necessary to treat those with severe obstruction of the tear ducts, or those who have repeated infections of the system.

The operation required is called Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), in which a new channel is created to allow tears to drain into the nose again. Specific operations depend on the site of obstruction. A DCR is a ‘same day' procedure performed at the ambulatory facility.
