Lower Eyelid Surgery: Blepharoplasty, Ectropion and Entropion

Blepharoplasty - In the lower eyelids the major problem is usually excess fat, not excess skin. As a result, the incision can be placed on the inside of the eyelid which prevents visible scarring and allows the surgery to be done without sutures. Excess fat is removed to eliminate bags associated with aging, producing a healthier, more youthful look. Should excess skin also be present, the surgeon may place the incision externally, allowing for skin and fat removal and a better surgical result.

Ectropion and Entropion refer to out-turning and in-turning of the lower eyelid caused by thinning of lower eyelid muscles. These medical conditions may expose the entire eye or cause the eyelashes to constantly rub against it. Repair of these conditions is performed through lower eyelid surgery to tighten the abnormal muscle. Patients often report dramatic relief from their symptoms within days after the procedure.

Eyelid plastic surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids at the same time. The procedures are usually performed in the office or at a surgery center using local anesthesia. These outpatient procedures do not require a hospital stay. Pain is typically mild to minimal and serious complications are quite rare.
