Optometrist Vs. Ophthalmologist

06/17/2016 15:40

Those who work in the eye health field can probably tell you that more times than not patients are unaware of the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist.  To the surprise of many, there are some key differences to these two professions. It is important that you understand the differences so you can seek out help from the appropriate individual.

So what are the differences?

  • Healthcare professionals who provide primary vision care.
  • Perform sight testing and correction for the diagnosis, treatment and management of vision changes.
  • Not a medical doctor. Instead, a doctor of optometry.
  • Able to prescribe medications for certain eye exams.

  • Doctor who specializes in eye and vision care.
  • Receive a higher level of training than an optometrist.
  • Licensed to practice medicine and to perform surgery.
  • Diagnoses and treats all eye diseases, performs eye surgery, prescribes and fits glasses and contact lenses.
  • May be specialized in a specific area such as glaucoma, retina, cornea, pediatrics, neurology or plastic surgery.
  • Specialists complete about one or two years of additional training called a fellowship.
